Za Moua and Seng Xiong Scholarship
The Za Moua and Seng Xiong Achievement scholarship is founded by their son, Dr. Toua Xiong and daughter-in-law, Darla Thao Xiong to help Hmong college students and families in Minnesota to provide those students from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds the support they need to get the education that they deserve.
Mr. and Mrs. Xiong were born and grew up in the rural Hmong mountain villages of Laos. They got married in Xanakharm District of Vientiane Province, Laos. They lived through the fight against the Pathet Lao Communists during the Vietnam War and was part the Hmong diaspora in the Post-Secret War Period. The Xiong fled to refugee camps in Thailand, and while waiting for resettlement placement, Toua Xiong was born. The Xiong family was ultimately granted entry into the United States and settled in Minnesota in 1989.
In chasing the American Dream, they embraced access and equality to education, and the freedom and opportunity to lead a dignified life. Now retired, Mr. and Mrs. Xiong are proud parents of their accomplished children. Among their five children are two physicians, two doctoral candidates, and one advanced scientist planning to matriculate into a doctoral program. Their aspiration as parents are to see many Hmong children accomplish their academic dreams and Dr. Xiong and Mrs. Thao Xiong are committed to supporting this mission in helping disadvantaged Hmong students pursue their educational dreams.
This scholarship is presented by the Hmong American Education Fund. The scholarship seeks to financially support one student in the pursuit of his or her educational goals. The successful applicant will be awarded up to $2000.00 to the choice of a college or university.
Scholarship Selection Criteria and Eligibility
Any person of Hmong descent pursuing an education to better themselves.
A U.S. citizen or legal resident alien.
All Hmong students who are residents of the State of Minnesota.
Continuing fulltime undergraduate and graduate students who are attending a public /private accredited 4-year college/university for the Fall 2023-2024 academic year.
No GPA requirement.
This scholarship is based on economic need base and community engagement.
